The Russians

The Russians are a small group of experienced living history enthusiasts who attempt to illustrate the impact of the Great War

and Russian Civil War on the Russian military by wearing some of the uniforms and accoutrements of the period.    This is the

period of Boris Pasternak's epic Doctor Zhivago and David Lean's film of that name. Our uniform display team charts the

evolution of Russian military dress and field equipment from 1914 through to 1924 and beyond.   By adopting this approach

we hope to be able to illustrate the economic and social impact the Great War and subsequent civil war had on the Russian

army and the way it responded to these developments in terms of the changes to its uniforms.

Our timetabled uniform display currently embraces the 13th Belozersky Infantry Regiment of the Great War, 5th Red Army on

the Eastern or Siberian Front, Red Cossacks of Budenny's famous Konarmia, Komuch artillery in Siberia, Siberian troops of the Kolchakia and the 3rd Red Army Rifle Regiment at the end of the Russian Civil War. In addition we can also portray the

evolution and development of Imperial German Army uniforms and equipment of WWI and that of the Russian Defence Corps

of WWII.

The Russians are not actively recruiting but if you are keen to join us then all we ask is that you try to meet our aspiration to

be as historically authentic as possible, paying attention to the fine detail of our various uniform impressions. Our watchword is

quality not quantity.  That said you will find us to be a welcoming group who share a common interest in the Russian Army of

the Great War and beyond.  We are also a family friendly society who can offer practical advice on where to source items of equipment and who would support individuals who have particular interests they wish to develop.  We believe we have one of

the best Great War and Russian Civil War uniform libraries in the country.

The Russians attend a number of prestigious re-enactment events both nationally and locally.  Most of our membership has

worked as film extras and we bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the hobby.  Every year we organise a small scale

multi-period event at Murton Park, a reconstruction of a Viking Age village that doubles nicely for early twentieth century

Russia.    We also work closely with several WWI re-enactment groups, in particular the Birmingham Pals, the Manchesters and

the 116th Hessians and the 13th Guards Division.  These are associations we are proud to maintain.   If you wish to book the Russians to attend your Living History or Re-enactment event then we will be only too happy to assist you in your endeavours

and tailor our impressions to suit your event.
